We’ve got ourselves a new apartment!

David (my husband) and I have been on the hunt for a bigger apartment, here in Berlin, for a couple of months.  Although we’ve found tons of ‘nice’ ones, we hadn’t been able to find one that was exactly what we were looking for – basically we were being super picky.

Here were our requirements:

  • Old – inside and out
  • Old German windows – tall double windows (wood/glass) that open like french doors
  • Solid wood floors – not linoleum that looks like wood or particle board
  • Character – old moulding, trim, and walls
  • 3 rooms (aside from the kitchen and bathroom)
  • An entry way
  • A balcony
  • Near a U-Bahn stop

Boys can dream right?

We were in no rush to move, so we took our time.  We wanted to find something that fit our list perfectly.

On August 22nd we found it!

David happened to find a listing on Immobilien Scout that sounded a bit too good to be true.  Not only did this apartment have everything we were looking for, but it also included a stipend for repairs!  We found ourselves an old fixer-upper!

Needless to say, we were pretty jazzed.

It took a few weeks of waiting, but on September 9th everything had been signed and we were handed the keys to our brand new home!

This past Friday we decided to go in and really take a look at what exactly we needed to do before we moved in.  The list is long and the work will be hard, but we’re pretty excited to get things going!

So, what did we do on the first day?

We peeled about 40% of the wallpaper off the walls – without tools!  Unfortunately we didn’t have any lights set up in the apartment, so once the sun came down it was time to go.

We’ll continue with the paper tomorrow!
